Your Puppys New Home

There are several things to consider when preparing your puppy's new home. A puppy is small and his world up to that point is small. He needs a small area in the house to live and play in, but not the run of the whole house. He doesn't yet know what is good for him and might get hurt in some areas of the house. Stairs, poisons, cats, other dogs, little children, and many other things are foreign to him and offer the chance of harm. If you leave the front door open, he will probably run out. Many are lost or hit by automobiles. They don't know any better and need time to learn. So, make a safe secure place for your new puppy and watch him grow.

Lamp cords are a hazard and should be covered or raised whenever possible. A child-gate or dog gate will restrict him to one room. Introduce him to any other pets carefully to see the reaction and avoid any injuries. Cats don't usually like puppies, so make sure your cat doesn't hurt him. Other dogs usually will accept puppies if you introduce them slowly.

You puppy will need a safe place to sleep. You may want to put him in your bed. Be prepared, this is an irreversible decision! Or, you could take a small dog kennel with the door removed and place it where he can retire in it. This is a proven method. Your puppy will need his own food and water bowls and they should be kept clean at all times. Keep plenty of food out at all times for puppies and water at all times for all dogs.
