Feeding And Weaning

Most puppies are ready to wean by about 3 to 5 weeks of age. It depends upon the breed and the condition of the puppies. Prior to weaning, the puppy must be introduced to solid foods. One method is to offer a mixture of cow's milk and baby cereal to the puppies at about 3 weeks of age. The mixture is placed upon the finger and offered to the puppy. The puppies learn to lap the mixture from a bowl.

Another method is to take dry puppy food and pulverize it in an ordinary food blender. The blender wil turn it to dust in an instant. This is placed in a bowl and left out for the puppies. They learn to lick this up and supplement it with the water you provide in a low bowl. Don't forget to keep plenty of clean cool water out for all your dogs, puppies and grown.

Many people recommend feeding times and such, but our experience with small puppies is to leave the food out at all times. Small animals can develop low-blood sugar very easily and having access to food at all times is really the best way to avoid it. If you notice a listliss puppy, it may have low blood sugar. Try a little sugared water with a medicine dropper. Add sugar or syrup and stir. This usually does the trick.
